Stop Titan
Campaign

From 2010 to 2013, I worked for the NC Coastal Federation as the coordinator for the Stop Titan Action Network, a grassroots coalition working to stop a foreign-owned cement plant from being built along the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, NC. During my position, I managed the coalition’s website, social media channels, and marketing and outreach committee comprised of staff and volunteers. I submitted grant reports and weekly partner updates, as well as coordinated a series of testimonial videos telling stories from community members fighting Titan. One of our biggest successes in this campaign was changing county-wide zoning laws that limited heavy industrial uses, including cement manufacturing, in close proximity to public lands, schools and residential properties. Leading up to several public hearings, I coordinated with reporters as well as developed fact sheets for speakers to use while submitting public comments to county officials. I designed green palm cards that supporters of the zoning change could hold up at a specific time so the county commissioners could visually see all the support they had in the room. In all, this battle would rage on a total of 8 years (well after I left the organization to move to Asheville), but it was ultimately successful in 2016 when the company dropped its plans to build their facility.
